Frequently Asked Questions

Who invented hookahs?

Most historians credit 16th-century Mughal India, often naming court physician Hakim Abul Fath (Abu’l-Fath Gilani) under Emperor Akbar, who popularized a coconut-shell water pipe to filter smoke. Early water pipes also appeared in Safavid Persia as qalyan, later spreading to the Ottoman Empire as nargile.

How to set up a hookah?

Fill the base with cold water until the hookah stem is submerged by 1–1.5 inches. Insert the stem and tray until snug. Attach the hose and attach your hookah bowl. Loosely pack shisha tobacco below the rim, and wrap foil tight with even holes, or use a hookah screen. Fully light natural coals until grey, place on the edge, heat-soak for 2–3 minutes, then take gentle pulls and rotate coals.

Why do hookahs use charcoal instead of a lighter?

Unlike a lighter’s direct flame, which scorches shisha and creates harsh, weak smoke, premium hookah coals provide steady, indirect heat that keeps flavored shisha tobacco smooth and enjoyable.
